What to Expect at Stonehenge: A Guide from Salisbury

If you've never been to Stonehenge, the logistics can feel complex. Here's a clear, chronological account of what actually happens from when you arrive at the Stonehenge car park to when you return to the shuttle.

Arriving at the Car Park

The Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle drops you at the Stonehenge Visitor Centre car park. From here, walk to the main building ÔÇö the ticket collection point is clearly signposted. Allow 5 minutes from the shuttle drop-off to the entrance desk.

Collecting Your Tickets

Show your pre-booked English Heritage email confirmation (screenshot it offline in case of poor signal). You'll receive a wristband or ticket indicating your timed entry slot. If you arrive early, you can explore the visitor centre exhibition until your time is called.

The Exhibition

The visitor centre contains a world-class exhibition on Stonehenge's construction, the landscape and the people who built it. Allow 30ÔÇô45 minutes here. The replica Neolithic village outside the centre is included and very effective for children.

The Shuttle to the Stones

English Heritage operates a 10-minute shuttle (small bus) from the visitor centre to the stone circle. Walking the 1.5-mile path is also an option and recommended in good weather ÔÇö it gives excellent views of the monument arriving from a distance, which dramatically increases the impact of seeing it.

At the Monument

You walk a circular path around Stonehenge, approximately 10 metres from the outer ring of stones. The path is fully accessible. Allow 30ÔÇô60 minutes at the monument itself. Return to the visitor centre on the EH shuttle or by foot.

Returning to Salisbury

Make your way back to the car park for your pre-booked return time on the Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle. The car park is directly adjacent to the visitor centre. Give yourself 15 minutes to navigate from the stones to the pick-up point.
