Stonehenge sits on open Salisbury Plain with no shelter and unpredictable weather. Packing correctly can be the difference between an unforgettable visit and a miserable one. Here's the essential list.
What to Carry
Layers: A base layer, mid layer and waterproof outer. Even in summer, wind and cloud on the plain can make it feel much colder than the forecast suggests.
Sturdy footwear: The walking paths at Stonehenge are compacted chalk — welly boots are rarely needed in summer, but the ground becomes very muddy along the verges in wet weather. Waterproof trainers or hiking shoes are ideal.
Water: The café at the visitor centre sells drinks, but it can have long queues in peak season. Bringing a 1-litre bottle means you don't have to worry about it.
Snacks: The café exists but is busy at lunchtime. If you're visiting with children especially, a packed snack is invaluable.
Camera/phone charger: The site is unmissable photographically. Make sure your phone is charged.
English Heritage booking confirmation: You will need your booking confirmation email — screenshot it so you have it offline.
What to Leave at Caboose
One of the genuine advantages of the Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle is free luggage storage at Caboose. Leave your main luggage, overnight bags and anything heavy. Only carry what you need for the Stonehenge visit itself — a small daypack is ideal.
What You Won't Need
You cannot get close enough to the stones to touch them on a standard visit — no need for gloves or specialist gear. Food is available on site. Umbrellas are more hindrance than help in exposed wind — a waterproof hood is better.
Ready to visit Stonehenge from Salisbury? The shuttle departs directly opposite Salisbury Train Station. Just £20 return per person, all in.
