Visiting Stonehenge in Winter from Salisbury

Stonehenge in winter is a dramatically different experience from the summer peak. Fewer crowds, crisper light, and the stones appearing more austere and powerful against a winter sky. From Salisbury, it's just as easy to reach ÔÇö here's what you need to know.

Winter Opening Times

Stonehenge operates reduced hours in winter. Between November and March, the site typically closes at 17:00 (last entry 16:00). Check english-heritage.org.uk for exact dates as hours vary year to year. The Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle operates a reduced winter schedule ÔÇö the last two departures (14:05 and 15:05) may not operate in winter. Check before booking.

Crowds

December, January and February are the quietest months at Stonehenge. You can stand at the viewing path with only a handful of other visitors ÔÇö a genuinely rare experience at one of Britain's most popular attractions. February and March see visitor numbers start to rise as the days lengthen.

Weather

Salisbury Plain is exposed. Winter at Stonehenge means wind, rain, and mud ÔÇö often all three simultaneously. Dress in layers, waterproof outer layer, and bring walking boots or wellies. The ground around the monument can become very muddy after rain. However, a winter Stonehenge visit under a dramatic sky is one of the most memorable experiences you can have in England.

Winter Solstice

21 December is the winter solstice ÔÇö when the sun rises and sets in precise alignment with the monument. English Heritage holds a ticketed Winter Solstice Sunrise event and a free open-access evening gathering. See english-heritage.org.uk for details and reading our full winter solstice guide.
