Things to Do in Salisbury Before Your Stonehenge Visit

Salisbury is a city worth investing time in ÔÇö not just a transit point on the way to Stonehenge. Here's the best of what the city offers, whether you have an hour before your shuttle or a full morning.

Salisbury Cathedral

England's tallest spire (123 metres) marks the centre of the medieval Cathedral Close, one of the finest examples of medieval urban planning in Europe. The Cathedral Close is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right. Inside, the cathedral houses the best-preserved of the four surviving copies of Magna Carta (1215). The Close is a 15-minute walk from the train station ÔÇö or visit on your way back from Stonehenge in the afternoon.

Salisbury Museum

The Salisbury Museum, in The King's House on the Cathedral Close, holds one of the most important collections of prehistoric artefacts in England ÔÇö including material excavated from the Stonehenge landscape. Visiting this museum before or after Stonehenge dramatically enriches the experience. Open TuesdayÔÇôSunday.

The Charter Market

Salisbury's twice-weekly open-air market (Tuesday and Saturday) fills the Market Square with produce, crafts and street food. It has operated on this site since 1227 ÔÇö one of England's oldest continuously running markets. Worth an early browse before catching the shuttle.

The Maltings and Riverside Walk

The Maltings shopping complex sits beside the River Avon near the city centre. The riverside walk ÔÇö past the historic mill buildings and watermeadows ÔÇö is one of the most pleasant short walks in any English city. Allow 30 minutes for a leisurely circuit.

Caboose

And of course ÔÇö Caboose itself at 115 South Western Road. The boutique B&B operates the Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle and is the ideal starting point for your Stonehenge day. Pop in, have your coffee, leave your bags, and board at your chosen departure time.
