Stonehenge at Sunrise: Getting There from Salisbury

Stonehenge at sunrise is one of the most spectacular views in England ÔÇö particularly during solstice, when the sun rises precisely over the Heel Stone and the alignment of the monument is fully revealed. Here's how to experience it from Salisbury.

English Heritage Sunrise Access Sessions

English Heritage periodically offers special access sessions at Stonehenge that allow visitors to stand among the stones (rather than viewing from the outer path). These include sunrise and sunset sessions. Check english-heritage.org.uk for availability ÔÇö sessions are booked months in advance and sell out immediately.

Summer Solstice (21 June)

The summer solstice at Stonehenge is a free, open-access event ÔÇö thousands of people gather for sunrise. Entry is free but transport must be arranged. The Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle does not typically operate before 10:05 for a standard booking, so for solstice sunrise, a taxi from Salisbury is the practical option (pre-book your driver the day before ÔÇö demand is very high). Return to Salisbury on the Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle from 10:40 onwards.

Non-Solstice Sunrise Visits

For English Heritage special access sessions in spring and autumn, sunrise is between 06:00 and 07:00. Pre-book a Salisbury taxi for the outbound journey and use the Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle for the return from Stonehenge from 10:40 onwards. Always confirm your outbound transport the evening before.

What to Bring

Layers ÔÇö Salisbury Plain is cold even in summer at dawn. A head torch if arriving before light. Your English Heritage booking confirmation and ID. Wellington boots or waterproof shoes are strongly advised for early morning visits when the ground is dewy.
